animal testing: a process in which ingredients and products are tested on animals to observe the reaction.

cruelty free: ingredients, products, or brands that do not test on animals, do not let third parties test on their behalf, and do not sell their products where testing is required by law. (antonym: non-cruelty free)

collaboration (collab): when an influencer works with a brand to design a product, usually with the color story.

depot: to remove a product from its original compact.

dupe: duplicate, an exact replica, whether for color match or formula.

fall-out: a term used to describe extra powder in a product being disturbed by a brush or another method of application.

fragrance-free: products that do not contain artificial fragrances.

gluten-free: cosmetic ingredients or products that do not contain wheat-based ingredients.

haul: buying multiple makeup products at once.

hit pan: to use up a makeup product to where you can see the bottom of the metal pan.

hypoallergenic: products that do not have ingredients prone to cause allergic reactions. This term is not regulated.

influencer: an occupation where people with a following create content for their audience and promote products based on their experience and recommendations.

Instagram: photo and short video platform that allows users to post content of all varieties that fall within community guidelines. This platform is often utilized by brands to create sponsored posts with influencers to showcase their products to the influencer's audience

"Latinx": an all inclusive/gender neutral term that describes the Latina/Latino community. The term is popularly used across social media.

macro-influencer: an influencer with a substantial amount of followers. Brands tend to gravitate towards these influencers due to their size as it correlates to more product sales.

micro-influencer: an influencer with less substantial amount of followers compared to the macro-influencers but still has a very invested following that will still result in more product sales. More and more brands are gravitating towards these influencers.

non-comedogenic: product that do not have ingredients prone to blocking the pores of the skin that may lead to acne or other facial irritations.

"n"-free: a term or regulation used primarily for nail polishes that do not contain harsh toxic ingredients.

pigment: mixtures of substances that produce a shade of color. These are typically used in eyeshadows and foundations to produce a variety of colors.

PR: public relations. This term is often referred to as product received by influencers in exchange for reviews. This is sent by the Public Relations/Marketing teams from brands, hence why it is called PR.

"reimbursement:" a phrase used to reference money, followers, exposure, etc. a brand will receive when collaborating with an influencer.

shade: the color of a product.

silico testing: an alternative to animal testing that uses computer models.

swatch: a term used by influencers to "test" a makeup product for color or formula. Swatches do not always accurately represent the performance of a product, but rather show the differences in color on different skin tones. Swatches are primarily on the inside of the arm.

undertone: a term that refers to the base color of a skin-tone or product that leans cool, warm, or neutral.

synthetic: artificial, laboratory-made ingredients that duplicate animal derived ingredients but are vegan.

unscented: products that do not have specific fragrances added to the product but may contain a scent to mask the scents of the ingredients.

vegan: cosmetic ingredients or products that are not derived from animals or their bi-products.

vegetarian: cosmetic ingredients or products that are not derived from animals but contain their bi-products.
